Using the Built-In Calculators for Item Placement
Oversite includes built-in calculators to help you quickly and accurately calculate quantities when placing items on a daily inspection. Instead of doing math by hand or using a separate calculator, you can enter measurements directly and let Oversite calculate the total for you.
When to Use the Calculator
The calculator icon appears next to the Quantity Placed field for any item that uses a supported unit of measure (such as square feet, cubic yards, tons, etc.). Use it when you need to:
Calculate area from length and width measurements
Calculate volume from dimensions
Calculate weight using density and volume
Combine multiple measurements into a single placement total
How to Access the Calculator
Open a Daily Inspection and navigate to the Items step
Add an item to the inspection or select an existing item
Look for the calculator icon next to the Quantity Placed field
Click the calculator icon to open the measurement calculator
How to Add a Calculation
After opening the calculator, you will see a list of available shapes at the bottom of the window
Click on a shape that matches what you are measuring (for example, Rectangle for a sidewalk section)
The shape will be added to your calculation list and will expand to show input fields
Enter your measurements in the input fields
Select the appropriate unit for each measurement using the dropdown (for example, FT for feet)
The calculated result will appear automatically
Adding Multiple Calculations
You can add as many calculations as needed. This is useful when measuring irregular areas or multiple sections.
After adding your first calculation, click another shape button to add a second calculation
Each calculation will be listed separately
All calculations are added together to give you a total at the bottom
To exclude a calculation from the total without deleting it, click the blue plus icon next to the result — it will turn gray to indicate it is not included
To delete a calculation, click the red trash icon
Adding Notes to Calculations
Each calculation has a Notes field where you can describe what you measured. This is helpful for documentation and future reference. For example, you might enter "North sidewalk section" or "Driveway repair area near garage."
Saving Your Calculations
When you are finished, you have two options:
Save Calculations — This saves your calculation work for documentation purposes but allows you to manually adjust the Quantity Placed field. Use this option if you want to record your math but need flexibility to round or adjust the final number.
Save & Use Total as Placement Value — This saves your calculations and automatically fills the Quantity Placed field with the calculated total. The field will be highlighted to indicate it is linked to your calculations. Use this option when you want the calculated total to be your official placement quantity.
Available Shapes and Formulas
For Area Items (SQFT, SY, ACRE)
Square — Enter one side length
Rectangle — Enter length and width
Triangle — Enter base and height
Circle — Enter radius
Semicircle — Enter radius
Circle Sector — Enter angle and radius
Trapezoid — Enter height and both parallel sides
Manual — Enter an area value directly
For Volume Items (CF, CY)
Cube — Enter one side length
Rectangular Prism — Enter length, width, and height
Cylinder — Enter radius and height
Area × Measured Length — Enter length and a volume-per-foot value (useful for items with a known cross-section)
Manual — Enter a volume value directly
For Weight Items (LBS, TON)
Cube — Enter density and one side length
Rectangular Prism — Enter density, length, width, and height
Cylinder — Enter density, radius, and height
Manual — Enter a weight value directly
Supported Units
The calculator automatically converts between compatible units. You can enter measurements in any of these units:
Length: FT, YARD, MILE
Area: SQFT, SY, ACRE
Volume: CF, CY
Weight: LBS, TON
Density: LBS/CF, TON/CF, TON/CY
Angle: DEGREE
Tips for Using the Calculator
Use the Notes field to document what each calculation represents — this helps when reviewing inspections later
You can mix different shapes in one calculation set — for example, a rectangle plus a semicircle for a sidewalk with a curved end
If you make a mistake, click the trash icon to remove a calculation and start over
The calculator remembers your work if you save it, so you can review your measurements on future inspections
